This month in the garden...

"The best way to make sure you're removing a weed and not a valuable plant? If it comes out of the ground easily it's a valuable plant."

Steve & Sandy Sandlin

Steve and Sandy Sandlin are the founders of the Port Washington Children’s Garden, an educational children’s garden that offers a five week gardening experience through the Port Washington-Saukville School District’s summer school program.

Steve, a professional gardener and organic farmer, and Sandy, a certified teacher and avid gardener, put together the PWSSD garden program drawing on their combined experience and passion for educating children about the natural world, gardening and food.

The program offers students the opportunity to learn basic gardening skills, develop social and work aptitude, while exploring healthy eating habits in a hands-on participatory program.  Working directly in the garden and greenhouse, children plant seeds, make compost, pull weeds, water, harvest, prepare and eat the results.

‘Our goal was to bring to the larger community of Port Washington the same dynamic experience that we witnessed on our organic farm. Children, especially, are drawn to gardening and the opportunity to learn about themselves and the world around them’.
